NORTH BUSH FIRES
DENSE PALL OF SMOKE WORST FOR MANY YEARS Since early Tuesday morning Whangarei borough and 200 square miles of surrounding country have been covered in a dense pall of smoke, which has reduced visibility and, in the Maungatapere-Poroti area, has caused sore eyes. Although the seat of the fire is in Pokeno Valley, in the Mangakahia district, 25 miles away, residents of long standing say the conditions in town to-day are comparable with the worst bush fires at the beginning of the century. The outbreak is believed to have started on the isolated property of Mr J. Clark, and spread to adjoining holdings containing large, stands of bush. Strong westerly winds swept the flames through the droughtparched scrub and forest, and caused billows of smoke. Ash carried on the wind fell 20 miles away.
Hopes of checking the fire at the inlet to the valley were held this afternoon, but property owners and troops are standing by to answer any call for assistance from the several residences threatened by a further extension of the outbreak.
