LEMON GRADING

Simplification of the grading of lemons is effected by an amendment gazetted last week to the 1940 lemon marketing regulations. The number of grades is reduced to the following:—Preferred commercial, commercial, first-grade peel, secondgrade jeel, juice grade. . A new size grouping is designed to produce cured fruit within the count ranges of 140, 158, 175 and 193 to the standard case within the grade of preferred commercial. This grouping is to be achieved by abolishing the grades formerly known as extra fancy, fancy and commercial, and including in the preferred commercial grade all such lemons which are not more than 2gin. in diameter and no: less than 2|in. Commercial grade will include lemons within the range of 2Mm diameter, designed to produce 120 count, or under 2Mn. and not smaller than 15 in., designed to produce counts of 210, 240 and 264.

In times of shortage, the Internal Marketing Division may include in the preferred commercial or commercial grades lemons wi|h greater blemish than the amounts for the 19 40 grades.
