LATEST WAR NEWS

The following is a summary of the latest war news: FRENCH NORTH AFRICA The British First Army is now closing in on Tunis and Bizerta and is meeting with considerable resistance in the form of enemy counter-attacks. Our land forces are being supported from the sea by the Royal Navy. Official news of the Allied operations states that at Tcburba, midway between Tunis and Bizerta we repulsed enemy counter-attacks. Continuous bombing attacks are being made on both towns. Seven enemy planes were destroyed and five of ours are missing. The Royal Navy is assisting in the operations and is providing cover for the advance of our forces. < LIBYA There has been a marked increase in patrol and artillery activity. A correspondent says that the artillery duels are a prelude to another ding-dong battle. RUSSIAN FRONT Soviet forces continue to ad vance at all points in the face of strong opposition. Inside Stalingrad the Russians continue to clean up enemy positions. The Germans in Stalingrad are now acting as a shield for the eastern flank of the Russians trapped between the Don and Volga rivers. The Red Army is now firmly astride the vital Russian railway supply route from Rzhev to Viaznia. The Russian forces have actually been in the northern suburbs of Rzhev for some time now. The Germans are flinging in all their reserves in an effort to stem the Soviet advance. NEW GUINEA The Japanese navy is still trying desperately to get reinforcements ashore to reinforce the trapped garrison between Gona and Buna. R.A.F. OFFENSIVE The Air Ministry announces that offensive patrols have been actiie over German occupied northern Europe. They attacked railway engines, troops and gun positions. Seven locomotives wore, damaged. One of our planes is missing.
