SEVERE SHAKE
FELT IN WELLINGTON
DAMAGE AT MASTERTON
(P.A.) Wellington, Dec. 2. A severe, earthquake shock was felt in Wellington at 12.15 p.m. today. Its direction appeared to be north and south. It was preceded by a gentler shake of lesser intensity. As far as is known at present no damage has been done in Wellington, but it is understood that at Masterton the post office, which suffered in the earlier shake of the year, was again affected, the front of the building falling out.
Another message says an earth tremor lasting about a minute and concluding with a sharp jolt, occurred in Wellington at 12.15 p.m. It was sufficiently severe to cause loose stuff to fall from some damaged buildings, and goods fell in some shops. A message from Petone reports that goods are down in some stores there.
A Palmerston North message states that the most pronunced earthquake experienced here since early in the morning of August 2 was felt at 12.14 p.m., when a fairly long tremor .with a marked swinging motion was felt. Some alarm was caused and some people indoors made for the streets, but there are no reports of damage. The power supply was not interrupted.
