GAY NINETIES BACK
Cause of much comment at a fashionable restaurant recently was the appearance of two well-known women, one wearing black not stockings and the other stockings of black lace. The net stockings had small butterflies embroidered on them, states Marjorie Goodisson in the Sydney Sun. “You wore stockings like that
when we were courting,” said one elderly diner to his wife. And very “gay nineties” the two women certainly looked. Manufacturer of the stockings, said that he has evolved a method whereby he can treat certain lace, mesh, and net materials to make them flexible enough for stockings. Tops, heels, and soles of the stockings are of ordinary woven silk. They keep up without garters or suspenders. “I used to make them mostly for theatrical purposes,” said Mr Schon, “but I had so many inquiries when I displayed a pair in the window that I decided to make some for general wear.”
The stockings are obtainable in gold, navy, and other colours as well as black, but, combined with black lace scanties and brassiere—known as a “black-out set”—the have proved the most popular. Some City stores have also brought out black silk stockings from dusty hasen^ents. “I thought they were dead stock until I found 10 pairs were sold within the first hour,” said the manageress of one hosiery department.
