The following items of interest are taken from the Bay of Plenty Times of fifty years ago:
•'The Bay of Plenty Lawn Tennis Club commences its season to-mor-row afternoon at its new grounds in Third Avenue. The committee has been doing good work in putting the lawn in order and having everything fixed up for a successful opening and a large attendance of members is expected.” “The meeting re racing matters on Wednesday night was the most successful gathering of the kind that
has been seen in Tauranga for a very long time passed. The resignation of the past secretary (Col. Dowell) owing to the apathy of the sporting men seems to have galvanised them into activity, with, the dread of hav-
ing no races in the summer; and great regret and penitance were expressed for previous neglect. Col. Dowell’s serveies to the club were eulogised in warm terms by several speakers, and his probable departure from the district was spoken of with
regret.” “The Otago Acclimatisation Socie:y has passed a resolution that the attention of the Government he directed to the necessity of takingmeasures through the police to prevent the introduction of snakes into New Zealand.” “The attendance on the cricket ground yesterday afternoon was not what it should have been, and the absence of younger players was partiqularly noticeable; it avouM appear that the youth of Tauranga taken as a whole, prefer to spend their half holiday helping each other to do nothing, now that the football is over for the season.”
