FIFTY-SIX WEEKLY

AUSTRALIAN HOURS OF WORK

Canberra, Oct. 9

From November 1 working hours in industry in Australia will be reduced to a maximum of 56 a week. This was announced by the Minister of Labour, Mr Ward, who said the decision was expected to relieve fatigue in industry and reduce absenteeism. Previously there was no limit on the number of hours that could be worked, but it had been found that some men worked such long hours that their efficiency fell off.

No limit was fixed for women workers, but the Government recommended that their hours should not exceed 52 a week except when absolutely necessary. Working hours would be limited to 60 a week immediately until the 56-hour maximum came into operation.
