ENGLISH PETROL PRICES

\ SUIIVKY THKOVGII THK VKARS ALL-TIME PEAK OF is HJd Tn reference to the recent increase of id per gallon in the price of petrol in England, and comparisons drawn with prices during the last war. it is evident that some incorrect information exists. As a matter of interest, the highest English price during the 1914-1 S war was 4s Id. for a short period, between September 3rd and October loth. 19'.7, when it was reduced to 3s Sid. the highest for any appreciable length of time during the last war. At a corresponding stage during the last war, that is. after two and a half years, the price was 2s lOd. It is of interest, in the accompanying table, to trace the price of petrol through the years; not every fluctuation is shown. After the "all-time peak" of August, 1920. of Is .".id. the price fell to 4s OJd in the October, and from January, 1921, when the petrol duty was removed, up to April. 1928, petrol was at its lowest, running by successive reduction down to Is Did; in April, 1928, a petrol duty was reimposed, not again to be lifted, but, of course, increased to its present rate of 9d a gallon, between 1928 and 19.'52 no startling alterations occurred.
