SUCCESSFUL SEASON

TAURANGA BOWLING

CLUB

Annual Meeting- Held

Mr A. B. Wood Elected

President

There was an attendance of .*>s members at the annual meeting- of the Tauranga Bowling- Club, which was held in the Presbyterian Hall on Tuesday evening, apologies being received from 10 members. The annual report stated that it was very gratifying to know that in spite of the perilous times through which all were passing the club had enjoyed a very successful season, both financially and otherwise. The membership had been maintained in spite of the adverse circumstances, the strength of the membership, which stood at SS. being the same as last year. The greens, which suffered a setback as a result of the long dry spell, soon recovered after the rain, and this, coupled with good management on the part of the Green Committee, resulted in them beingbrought back into excellent order. It was indeed most .gratifying to hear the remarks of visiting bowlers concerning the condition of the greens. At the end of last season the greenkeeper (Mr C. Conway) resigned his position to take over the same duties for the Onehunga Club. The 'club was sorry to lose his services, but had been most fortunate in securing Mr J. Stuart to fill the position. Mr Stuart had proved a valuable and capable servant to the club. Last winter the club played winter bowls on its top green for the first time, and it proved most successful in every respect. Although the wet weather prevented bowling on 2S days out of S 9 playing days, the takings were only slightly below last year’s. A building committee was

set up to go into the question of additions to the pavilion, but decided owing to the uncertainty of the prevailing conditions not to proceed with the project. The official opening of the club was held on. Saturday, September 27, 1941. There were visiting teams from Tauranga South, Te Puke and Mount Maunganui Clubs, and visitors from Putaruru and Wellington. After the president (Mr S. A. Woods) welcomed the visitors to the opening, he called on Mrs Woods to throw the first jack and bowl, and then declared the season open. Eight full rinks participated in play, and a most enjoyable afternoon tea was served by the ladies. During the year the club held several one-day tournaments and progressive pairs competitions, which were well patronised, and, together with the combined tourney with. 5S entries, were a great help to the club financially. Outstanding Success

The annual tournament was an outstanding success, with record entries, and favoured with perfect weather. The semi-finals and finals of both the rinks and pairs were played on the club’s bottom green. The winners of the rinks were the Te Aroha team (M. Austin, C. Callaghan, H. Powell, and A. Callaghan (s)), the runners-up being the Tauranga South team (W. S. Holland, C. 0. Bayley, H. Whitworth, and T. -Bartlett (s)). The pairs were won by the Matamata pair (D. Gunn and F. W. Wright), and the runners-up were C. D. Marshall and C. Stevenson, of Rangiri. The club was represented at the Rotorua tournament by a team comprising J. A. Guinness, T. Moncur, A. Bell, and V. C. Potter, who qualified and won two games in the post section play. Five pairs also entered and two qualified—A. Bell and H. Conder, and S. A. Woods and V. C. Potter. The latter went through, to the semi-finals, but were beaten by Higginbotham’s pair, who won the tournament. These perforrnances

showed that the standard of play by members of the Tauranga Club was comparable with the best to be found, i Tw r o teams from the club took part j in the Thames tournament and did ; very well, and a team also went ta I the Cambridge tournament. Tie j club was also represented at several 'tournaments at Tauranga South, Te Puke and Katikati, also doing very well in these contests. The Bay of | Plenty Centre champion of champion singles and executive fours were cani celled this year owing to travel re- ; strictions, and the pennant gamo I were not completed owing to the same cause. I The Bunting Friendly Bowl competition was played between the be Tauranga clubs, and the Tauranga Club retained the bowl'with a margin of 36 points. The club’s competitions were again very popular and were completed a good time, the winners being Champion singles: V. C. •• champion pairs: H. Martin • Bell; champion rink: B. N-Turne-W. T. Bent* T. H. Roseveare, and W. McDonald (s). Mr A. E. very generously gave a trophy i • the veterans’ singles, entrants to ■ 70 years of age or over. Font - entered, and W. T.
