The following was taken from the Bay of Plenty Times of fifty years ago: "The membership of the Tauranga Gymnasium Club is still steadily increasing and now numbers nearly forty, the younger members being particularly numerous. On Fridayevening last, the captain addressed the younger members on the objects for which the club existed, and the necessity of discipline and order being maintained at the practices and said that the committee was determined to carry this out at all hazards. In future the squads would be formed at 7.45 instead of S, as formerly and the juniors will leave at 9.30. He reminded the boys especially that they must not look upon the gymnasium as a play ground but as a place where they come to obtain a knowledge of gymnastics and a good physical development. The usual exercises were then gone through and evinced considerable improvement since the beginning of the season, reflecting great credit on the leaders appointed for each exercise, for the careful manner in which they carried out their duties."
