Opening Of Basketball
YANKEE TOURNAMENT ON DOMAIN
SEVERAL PROVINCIAL REPRESENTATIVE PRESENT
After very doubtful weather con'ditions in the morning the sky cleared, clouds giving way to ideal sunshine on Saturday last, so that the Basketball Association’s Yankee Tournament could be carried; through. The grounds, though somewhat heavy early in the afternoon, improved and some interesting play was noted in the senior teams. All teams seem to have suffered changes and some solid practice will be necessary to work up good team combination by the opening of cham’pionship play. Two players who lent interest to the day’s play were Miss Rona Stephenson, playing for Terriers (as it was an open day), and Miss B. de Berry. Miss Stephenson started rep play some years back as a Poverty Bay defence, and has since represented ''Auckland and Canterbury, and been in both the North Island and New Zealand teams, while Miss de Berry has her New Zealand University blue. Assisting with the refereeing was another provincial rep. player. Miss C. Miller (Te Puke), and a spectator was Mrs C. Montgomery (Napier) whose, initiative got the Tauranga Association commenced.
Games followed one another briskly, and most of the matches were played off to time; but it was not found possible to play off the section finalists, and these will probably be played during next Saturday’s games. Mrs Johnson, Mrs Boyce, Mr Holloway and Misses Miller and Naylor controlled the games, and Mr Polley acted as time keeper with Mr Long as the record steward.
