Tweed Check-Up
“The bolder the check, the smarter the tweed, seems to be a new fashion rule in Britain. Plaid patterns which used only to be seen on Scottish moors are now used foi coats to be worn even in London. Colours range from soft neutial tones to bold contrasts; but mostly they combine the subtle shades seen on mountain and lake; the pin pie of heather, with grass-green and misty-blues. Weavers of British tweeds aie no letting the war -stop their progress. At a fashion show of fabrics in London they proved how all the time they are experimenting with new designs, new textures, to keep up Britain’s world reputation for tweeds. There were Welsh flannels —ranging in texture from thin worsted to cosy blanket cloth —Yorkshire suitings, soft Cumberland tweeds, tough Ulster homespuns, Scottish tweeds. Checks have appeared in profusion on soft dress materials, too, and it’s a popular fashion to wear a plain skirt with a plaid jacket m a so material.
