A PAGE FROM THE PAST
Small items from the Bay of Plenty Times of fifty years ago read:
"It has been brought to our notice that there is no dwelling house allowance for the school master at No. 2. School. We hope that this matter Avill be taken up at the annual meeting of householders, which will take place at the end of the month.
"There was no mail to-day from Auckland per steamer Australia. The reason is that the Union Company do not advertise their steamers to call at Tauranga in the Auckland papers. At all events they might give notice to the postal authorities. "The residents in and around Devonport Road have been greatly annoyed by a red and white steer, with a wretched bell that is constantly sounding, attached to its neck. The animal seems to be able to enter any of the properties, no matter what sort of a fence has been erected to protect them, and its favourite game is to get as close to the house as possible, especially at night. The sound of the bell of course does not allow of much sleep to those in the house, and the animal does damage to valuable trees. How is it our vigilant poundkeeper allows the brute to roam at large? "While Mr Ensor was at breakfast this morning, his horse attached to a dray, in which was a plough, bolted. The dray and plough were smashed.
"The annuar meeting of the Tauranga Football Club Avill be held in the gymnasium rooms on Wednesday next. It is to be there will be a good attendance."
