NEWS IN TOWN
Lucky Ticket Holders. A most consistent winner of raffles at the Patriotic Shop is Miss L. Macmillan, who has had an unusual run of luck in winning at least one raffle a week for weeks past. On Friday last over 500 tickets were sold on a pair of shoes, but Miss Macmillan, who generally takes at least one ticket in everything going, still came out the winner. The Macmillan family generally have been very fortunate. Miss Violet Macmillan winning a car just before Christmas, and other members of her family winning minor prizes. Parking By-laws. The car parking in the town, especially on busy days is getting really awful. At one time on Saturday morning outside the Times Office cars were stopped two abreast on either side of the road so that it was almost impossible to get along Willow Street at all. Devonport Road is well known, lorries frequently drawing up outside a parked ear and blocking more than half the road. Surely something can be done about it. The Blackout. In spite of the activities of the wardens there are still a few windows about the borough showing a fair amount of light. Residents generally, however, have responded very well to the appeal to obscure lights, although the blacking out of many windows has presented quite a problem to them. Heavy Rain. Threatening conditions throughout yesterday morning culminated in fairly heavy rain which began to fall late in the afternoon and coptinued practically throughout the night. In the 24 hours ended at 9 o’clock this morning 69 points of rain were recorded in the borough.
