CLOSING OF 1940-41 SEASON**

AFTERNOON ON TAUEANGA CLUB’S COURTS

The official closing of the lawn tenuis season took place on Saturday afternoon at the Taurauga Club’s courts in the presence of a large number of players and visitors. The President, Mr K. Page, reviewed the season’s activities, stating that it had been very successful despite loss of members owing to the war and making appreciative reference to the way in which members had supported the club. He thanked the Committee for their excellent work, especially mentioning the lady secretary and the treasurer, Misses Sherriff and Baker, who had filled the breach well and also the Club Captain, Mr C. J. Steedman, for his unremitting supervision. Special mention was made of the work of the senior champions, Mrs Johnson for her coaching and organising of children’s and mid-week ladies’ tennis, and Mr Keith Dyer for his coaching; Mr Jones for the excellent condition of the lawns, and Mrs Rundell for her capable catering. Congratulations were extended to the senior team on again winning the Dunlop Shield and Lees Cup and the junior team on winning the west section of the Watt Cup, the final for which was not played against Opotiki., Presentation of the trophies won during the season was made by Mrs Page, after which the visitors were guests of the club at afternoon tea. Competition winners were as under; — Championships Ladies. —Senior, Mrs D. Johnson;

runner-up. Miss W. Richardson; intermediate, Miss E. Wakqford; junior. Miss H. Hartley. Men. —Senior, Keith Dyer: run-ner-up, Philip Johnston: intermediate, E. F. Warnes; junior, E. Cooney. Ladies’ Doubles.—Senior. Mrs Bassett and Miss Alley; junior, Misses McLauchlan and Naylor. Men’s Doubles. —Senior, K. Dyer and M. Bell; junior, R. H. Hay and E. S. Bartlett. Mixed Doubles—Senior, Mrs Johnson and A. Stenhouse; junior, Miss Naylor and F. Warnes. Handicaps Ladies’ Singles,—Miss R. Alley. Men’s Singles.—A. Thodey. Ladies’ Doubles.— Misses Alley and Sherriff. Men’s Doubles. —F. Warnes and J. Martin. j > Mixed Doubles. — Miss R. Alley and McShane. Although the season has officially closed, the courts will be kept open over the Easter week-end. The final ladies’ day will be held on Wednesday next at 2 p.m. and all lady players are cordially invited to be present, ■ A match at Te Puke for the Morton Cup was postponed owing to rain and may take place later.
