Big Guns Made Now Almost Invariably Without Flaw

American 16-inch guns now are whittled out of million-pound ingots almost invariablv without flaws, reported Francis B. Foley, Trustee of the American Society for Metal meeting held at Cleveland. Artillery barrels are machined from huge ingots of steel in much the same way a square stick might be whittled round, he explained, and literally tons of metal are pared off. The bore then must be machined out to receive its wear-resisting lining. “It was not infrequent during 1917 to have practically completed a gigantic gun only to find a flaw developed in the steel’s structure,” Mr Foley said. “In such cases the guns were necessarily discarded. Mr Foley is research director for the Midvale Co. at Philadelphia.
