A PAGE FROM THE PAST
From the Bay of Plenty Times of January 9. 1891, comes the following paragraphs;
“A dwelling house at Katikati. the property of Mr F. A. Purvis, and occupied by Mr and Mrs Busby was destroyed by fire on Friday night. We understand that Mr and Mrs Busby were away, and that a little girl was left in the house. She says that at 5 o’clock she lit the fire to boil the kettle, and then went to milk the cow. On returning, she found the front part of the house on fire, and had only time to snatch some old blankets and pots and pans before the house was burnt. The house is insured but Mr and Mrs Busby have lost everything. A subscription is being raised at Katikati for their benefit.
“Mr Mulgan, formerly President of the “Mutual” at Katikati. gave an interesting lecture of Trades’ Union and strikes last Thursday evening.
“The postponed Catholic sports were held yesterday in Mr de Boarders paddock. The day wag all that could be desired. The course for running was marked out with flags. There was a large attendance of children, and the sports under the superintendence of Mr Bonner were a great success. At seven o’clock the children sat down on the grass in circles and tea and cakes were handed round. After was over, dancihg and games were kept up till a late hour and all the children went away delighted with the toys they had won. /‘As one approaches Tauranga from Katikati pne is struck by the large area of land in cultivation. The main crops are wheat and oats, which look really well. The reaping machine is already at work. After all local wants have been supplied, there should be a large surplus for export, larger than in any previous year. ‘More power’ to the farmer!”
