CHANGE IN COMMAND
LIEUT. COMMANDER WEST’S PROMOTION
FOLLOWED BY UNTIMELY *
ACCIDENT
We are pleased to learn that Lieut. Commander C. J. West has received notice of his promotion from H.M.S. Scarab to commander of H.M.S. Scorpion and in the words of Commander West his new command Is a “beauty.” It is exceedingly unfortunate, however, that Commander West will not be able to take over his new ship for some time as he is at present in hospital in Singapore Suffering horn a fractured kpee cap. The accident occurred during an officers’ tug of war at a sports meeting, just as Commander West’s team was .exerting itself for the final successful effort. Writing to his wife, Mrs C. J. West, Mount Maunganui, Commander West quoted a cablegram he had received from his relatives in England, and with Mrs West’s permission we publish it as a further illustration— -if , this is necessary—of the heroic ana indomitable spirit of those in tl,e Homeland. The cable x - eads: “Heavy air fight right over our house bombs dropping all round —quite excitingkeep smiling. AH well.’*
