THE AMERICAN WAY
FORTY-PLUS CLUB SMILES A small newspaper advertisement was the spring-board by which 213 unemployed executives got a new start in the business world, the Forty-Plus Club of western Pennsylvania reported recently. Just one year ago the Club was organized by a group of local businessmen who felt that “life begins at 40.” They inserted a classified advertisement in a local newspaper, inviting jobless executives more than 40 years of age who had earned £BOO a year or more to call at the Club’s office. The applicants were coached in “selling” themselves to prospective employers, and as Pittsbm*gh business leaders became interested in the plan, jobs began to trickle in. Thus, on its first anniversary, Forty-Plus announced a total of 213 placements, 161 of them permanent. The jobs pay up to £ISOO a year. The Club says it still has “many equally fine and efficient people” available for jobs.
