Vagaries of the Weather. A .biting Avind yesterday meant coats buttoned up to the' chin, and ’ everyone shivering. It was an average Friday for the number of shoppers and there were many appeals—including Patriotic and Plunket Special Appeal. To-day there is warm sunshine, and it is well to remember those in less happy circumstances, and hunt out an odd warm garment for the special refugee collection this afternoon. Parcels hung on" the doorknob if the householder is out will be recognised. 3le*Vn. Theft. A particularly mean theft was committed recently at night, when young, plants were' taken from the High School garden bordering Camelron Road. It seems rather despicable for anyone to stoop to of pilfering. The Committee have been to some trouble to beautify the school grounds for the benefit of the children, and it is not encouraging to think that adults should deprive them of this pleasure for selfish ends. Regulations. Many motorists were caught un-aware-yesterday by the Traffic Inspectors from the Ministry of Transport, County Council and Borough Council, when a detailed inspection of cars, both entering and leaving toAvn, was made. The fact that warrants of fitness are required under Ministry of Transport regulations appeared to have been forgotten by many of the road users. New Potatoes. Further to our paragraph yesterday mentioning the fact that new potatoes, although several months out of season, had been dug at ' the Mount, we Avere informed yesterday that Mr H. W. F. King' ,of Devonport Road, had dug neAv potatoes in Tauranga over a \veek ago.
