A PAGE FROM THE PAST TAURANGA FIFTY YEARS AGO The establishment of freezing works here was a burning question fifty years ago, according to a paragraph we take from the Bay of Plenty Times of April 10, 1890: ‘'Messrs. Jonathan Brown and Pratt, delegates from the freezingworks committee, attended a meeting of the Farmers' Club at Waikato last week, for the purpose of bringing forward the proposal of Messrs. Nelson Bros., to erect freezing works at Tauranga. There were 3 0 farmers present. The meeting asked many questions, which were answered to their satisfaction, particularly as to the state of Cambridge track. Mr. Brown informed them that he and Mr. Pratt had just gone through and had found the track in good order, and all the grades good, so that a hors© could trot all the way. He considered the track better than most which he had travelled over. Mr. Ritchie, of the Patetere block, sent his secretary to attend the meeting, and to inform the delegates not to give up the idea of starting the freezing works at Tauranga, as he was certain that the sheep guarantee could be got. He himself would guarantee 2000 sheep. Messrs Brown and Pratt are much pleased with their interview. They were informed that sufficient fat sheep could be got from Waikato to keep going the freezing works at Tauranga and Auckland.”
