RACING AT TAURANGA
“THE GOODWOOD OF N.Z.” REFERENCE IN PARLIAMENT. The Hon Mr Parry, Minister of Internal Affairs, quoted some interesting* figures concerning totalisator receipts in the course of a speech on the Budget on Thursday night. , The Chairman of the Dairy' Conference, said the Minister, had recently stated that 80 per cent of the reduction of production was due to the bad season, and 20 per cent, to labour and other factors. There was evidence to disprove any suggestion that there was a lack of prosperity amongst the farmers to-day. Racing returns in country districts' reflected the prosperity of the farmers. Matamata provided a typical example. Mr Doidge: There you have one of the most progressive racing clubs in the Dominion. Hon. Mr Parry; I’ll admit that. In 1935 the takings of the Matamata Club were £ 12,695. In 1939 they were £ 30,607 —an increase of 141 per cent. Mr Doidge: Give them a permit for another racing day and see what they will do. Hon. Mr Parry: Naturally the hon. member would ask for another day. Equally significant are the figures indicating the progress of the Bay of Plenty meeting 9 at Tauranga. Mr Doidge: The Goodwood of New Zealand.
• Hon Mr Parry; These records indicate the degree of prosperity which prevails in the country districts today. .
