SALVATION ARMY

FORTY-SIXTH ANNIVERSARY On the 18th August, 1893, the Tauranga Corps of the Salvation Army was opened by Captain Renshaw. The 46th Aniversary of this event has just been celebrated by a six day’s campaign under the leadership of Adjutant and Mrs S. Smith. The campaign commenced on the late shopping night with the - Band mounted upon a lorry, playing, singing, and testifying at several stands in the town. . . . • At the Prayer and'Praise meeting on Saturday evening Mrs Smith gave a helpful message. Sunday was fully and usefully occupied. Although snow and hail fell, a good number attended the Outpost Meeting at Oropi in the morning, including a number of children. Mrs Adjutant Smith’s talk to the children and the Adjutant’s address on “Things which cannot be moved” were very helpful. The afternoon found the visiting and local officers and the Band at the Mount, where in spite of exceptionally cold : and wet weather, an hour’s playing in the residential area, and a bright meeting indoors took place. These services were appreciated to the full. A Church Parade of local town organisations to be held in the Civic was planned for the night engagement. While the severe weather doubtless prevented a number from attending, nevertheless, a good crowd, mostly men, availed themselves of the opportunity to listen to the address on “The. Coming Golden Age” by Adjutant Smith, and to enjoy a hearty sing from the specially prepared song sheet. During the meeting the Band did good service in leading the congregational singing and playing the selection “The Story of Jesus.” A very bright and happy spirit prevailed during the Anniversary programme given by friends of the Army, and Salvationists on Monday night. Adjutant Smith chaired this gathering in a bright and acceptable manner. A journey of 20 miles was made on Tuesday night by the officers and Band to Aongatete. A bright,Thanksgiving meeting was held here to the spiritual profit of a good congregation. The Campaign concluded with a succesful Home League gathering, this having been reported already.
