OWNERS’ PROBLEMS
QUERIES FROM READERS Q. Because the aluminium head on my engine cracked I replaced it with a cast iron head. Will this cause the engine to run hotter? * W.R.P. A. The cast iron head should not make any material difference because it is doubtless of lower compression. Aluminium conducts heat more freely but usually a head of this metal fits closer and raises engine compression. You may notice a slight increase in motor temperature, but not enough to cause any trouble.
Q. How can I tell when the octane selector is properly set? —G.B.
A. The best way, of course, is with the aid of ignition testing equipment at the service station. But a fairly practical plan is to set the selector to a point where the engine pings sharply when accelerating or climbing a hill. Then set the selector back until the ping is just barely audible on sharp* acceleration. Experienced drivers like to hear a little ping as assurance to them that the ignition timing is properly advanced.
