OBITUARY
MR. THOMAS CLARK IN The death has occurred of Mr Thomas Clarkin, aged 71, of Hamilton. Mr Clarkin was born at Panmure and came to the Waikato 60 years ago. He was engaged in contracting on the Main Trunk line at Otorohanga and Te Kulti. He was also employed at gold-mining at Waiorongomai and Reefton, and in contracting at the Waihi goldmines. He moved to Eureka in 1904, when he commenced farming, in which he engaged until 1923. He then came into Hamilton to live. Mr Clarkin took an active part in public affairs, and was a former chairman of the old Eureka Co-oper-ative Dairy Company, Limited, chairman of the Eureka Drainage )Board, a member of the Waikato County Council and thq Tamahere Road Board. For many years he was associated with the Waikato Agricultural and Pastoral Association, and was a past president and life-mem-ber. He was also a prominent exhibitor. Mr Clarkin took a. life-long interest in Rugby football. He represented ' Auckland in 1893, 1895, 1897 and 18 98. He also represented Hamilton, Reefton, Rotorua, Tauranga, and the Goldfields. He was a fine type of forward. After his playing career was over he became president of the Waikato Rugby Union and later was made a life-member. He was also patron of the HamiltcAi Union and an officer of the Marist Club. For 22 years, Mr Clarkin .was a member of the executive of the Waikato Racing Club, while he was an executive member and a life-mem-ber of the Waikato Trotting Club. He was a member of the Waikato Hunt Club executive for many years, and president of the Hamilton Polo Club He is survived by three sons and four daughters.
