NIZAM OF HYDERABAD The Nizam of Hyderabad, India, the richest man in the world, lives on the income of the income of his income. The London Daily News says that the Nizam’s annual income is £ 1,125,000, on which he pays no income tax. Moreover, he has saved £ 1,000,000 a year since his accession, in 1914. Experts from Amsterdam, London, Paris, and New York, after months spent on the valuation of the Nizam’s jewellery, have produced estimates ranging from £ 200,000,000 to £ 600,000,000. Once the Nizam’s father and uncle had their' larger pearls placed in baskets on the palace steps, and threw billiard balls at the baskets to see how many pearls they could dislodge. Another Indian prince, owning amazing jewels is the Gaekwar of Baroda, whose larger pearls are stored in pillow-cases, while the floor of a room, 14ft. square, is covered with trays of graded emeralds.
