PiUllllilIlllilllllIllllliyilIll!llllllIilllllilllllIIIl!lWI!llllliyiyiWlllIIMlini!Il!ll!lI!!lillllllflI!liI!Il^ A PAGE FROXtf THE PAST 9 Tauranga 50 Years Ag^ Here is a cryptic message from Auckland appearing- in the Bay ,of Plenty Times of May 2nd, ISS9; “Some little excitement was paused last night at the Columbia Skating Rink by-Miss Mabel Sylvester, while going- through her performance.”' . - These items are from the same issue; — “Yesterday eight of our staff were photographed by Mr Chissell.” We would like to see that photograph. “On dit that, proceedings are to be taken against a local publican for a breach of the Licensing Act, by allowing card playing in Tiis house after 10 o’clock p.m.” We seem to have travelled far in fifty years. “ correspondent writes:—‘A prominent member of one of the Tauranga shooting parties, who went, down the coast, lately, was taken by the Matata natives for a Mormon Missionary. Moral: Don’t look too solemn.’ ” * “Mr G. A. Ward expects to finish the illuminated address to Mr Brabant in about a week. His work has made good progress, and judging from its present state will, when finished, be ‘a thing of beauty,’ and a credit to Tauranga.”
