Year’s Operations of Tauranga Power Board

A special meeting of the Tauranga Flee trie-Tow or Hoard, attended by Messrs Allan Smith (Chairman). C. S s Cane, 11. J. Clarke. W. H. J. pole s c. Baron, G. H. Mends and if o' Lever, was held yesterday, rir purpose was to receive the annual reports of the Secretary, Mr. J. p Chambers and the Engineer, Mr. j” b. Bongard. ' Tlie report, and estimates submitted bv the Secietary were adopted on the mol ion of the Chairman, seconcWl by Mi-. Lever, and the report E ths Engineer was also adopted, on tlu; motion of Mr. Ganc, seconded by Mr. Lever. Bulk Charges for Power The General Purposes Committee was authorised to approach the Borough Council with a view to securing a reduction in the hulk charges for power. Engincor’s Keport The Engineer’s report was as follows; — “Reticulation. — The reticulation system has been extended during the year as shown in the list of extensions attached, the route miles of line having increased by 33 miles, from 517 last year to 550 as at 31st March this year. On this 550 miles now erected we have 20 68 miles of wire, 368 transformers and 11,571 poles. The 368 transformers in use require 9300 gallons of transformer oil. “New plant of particular interest installed during the year was the new transformer for the Harvey Street sub-station, equipped with automatic on-load tap changing of the mercury switch type. “Maintenance. —The main items included the replacement of the balance of the original standards in the 33,000 v Omanawa-Te Puke line, and keeping open the track under this line. Owing to the growth of fern on certain sections, /this has entailed considerable work. This line was also damaged by fire on two occasions, and special precautions had to be taken to prevent a recurrence. “At Sharp’s Road, Katikati, maintenance was carried out and lines rearranged to improve the supply. At, Mount Maunganui and Maketu considerable work was carried out in addition to general maintenance over the whole system. ' “Sertice.—lncreasing costs are affecting this part of the Board’s activities, and indications point to further increases, which may necessitate some alterations in the system and ' charges in this department. "Load.—The satisfactory annual increase has again been maintained for the year under review, but we' may have difficulty in obtaining supplies of certain lines of material necessary, if we intend to carry on at the same rate. The position at present is somewhat uncertain, and every endeavour will have to be made to get over any difficulties that do arise, as it would be regrettable if the Board had to reduce the programme of extending into rural areas. “Transport.—The number of vehicles and the districts in which they are stationed is as follows: Katikati 1 Tauranga........ 7 Te Puke 2 10 "The total mileage recorded for all Vehicles for the 'year was 99,098 miles.” Works Carried Out During the Year High Tension Extensions and Distribution Substations. The increased revenue per unit from the sheds has resulted thVough a drop in the unit consumption during the last twelve months accompanied by a slight increase in the revenue. The sale of the cheaper rate units has decreased considerably, while the sale of the higher rate units has increased, brought about by the abnormal season, in addition ,to a number of farms decreasing the size of herds milked, due to labour difficulties.^ DOMESTIC SUPPLY No. of Houses Katikati. .... 28 7 Tauranga 1074 Te Puke 502 Total 1863 No. Charged “All Electric” Kate Katikati .... 87 Tauranga 336 Te Puke .... 124 Total 547 Average revenue per “All Electric House,” £l4 12s. “In dealing with the “Estimates” for the year ending 31st March 1940, it has been necessary to take into consideration known alterations that have taken place during the lsst twelve months. The increased unit sales for last year were 1,391,465. I anticipate that the Trading Sales will drop off this year and for the purposes of compiling the “estimates” have based my calculations on an increase in unit sales of 1,000,000 at an average of .7d per unit * totalling £ 2541 13s 4d. The purchase of the additional 1,000,000 units will cost an average of .25d per unit totalling £1,041 13s 4d, Interest and Sinking Fund Commitments have been . calculated on the basis that an additional £ 15,000 of loan money will be uplifted at the 30th June, 1939, on a half-yearly repayment basis. The “Estimates” include only a half year’s sinking fund on this new loan. No allowance, has been made for any increases in salaries or wages. “Attached hereto is a statement of the Estimated Income and Expenditure of the Board for the year ending 31st March, 1940, with the corresponding figures for last year alongside.
