WATER SUPPLY

GOOD VOLUME EXTENSION TO MOUNT MAUNGANUI INSPECTION OF PIPE LINE Cr Malheson presented the follow* ing report, to Wednesday night’s meeting of the Borough Council: " 1. Since last meeting of the Council questions which will require the attention of your Committee, have not acquired official form. Meanwhile, the Chairman has kept *in touch with the Engineer in regard to works progressing and potential. 2. Mount Maunganui MaimA-This line is progressing satisfactorily. 2. Minor Extensions. —lt is anticipated that at an early date' applications will 1 1 e made for extensions* (a) to Messrs McLauchlin’s property' Otumoetai. about six chains; th) {q properties near -Mr G. I). Hynds Greerton. ’’ 4. Waiorohi Main Supply.—Having regard to the acute shortage of water in several towns it was deemed advisable to observe the influence of a prolonged drought on the Taurangii borough supply. A general inspection of the pipe line was, therefore made on April 1(5, when it was found that the decrease in volume at the intake was not appreciable, and that as usual, millions of gallons of surplus water > were flowing over the spillway daily. It is gratifying to know that restrictions were unnecessary during a dry spell, when hoses were used very generously. Mention has, however, been made of instances occurring on well-loaded pipes of small calibre when excessive use of the hose has disorganised neighbouring hot water services. At the intake all appointments are clean and operating satisfactorily. The track is in good order. 5. Pipe line.—During the last-six months erosion has been negligible and there are no visible indications of danger in the near future. However, where a pipe-line follows a river course through its gorge and valley stages, possible danger points are never entirely absent. While these points, considered individually, suggest only varying degrees of remoteness, yet when taken in the aggregate, they indicate clearly the necessity for complete preparedness for immediate action in case of an unexpected accident to the main. Messrs McDauchlin Bros., Otumoetai wrote asking that the water supply be extended to their property. A joint communication was read from Mr R. B. Phelps and a number of other residents of Greerton, asking for water supply to their properties. Cr Matheson gave details regarding the two requests. > The Mayor moved —That the matters be referred to the Water Committee to report' upon.—Seconded by Cr Daines and carried.
