Perriman, D. Matheson and A. A. Fleming. At the previous meeting of the Council three tenders Avere received for bituminous sealing of, approximately, 272 chains of metalled roads within the borough, including the folloAving:

Chains. Dive Crescent, from Strand Crossing to the Military Cemetery 47.5 Sixth Avenue, from Edgcumbe Road to Devonport Road 25. G Fraser Street, from Eleventh

The above schedule is subject to some alterations in regard to lengths. The firms which submitted tenders were:

Andrew Murray, Auckland. H. V. Kerr and Co., Ltd.. Epsom. Matthews and Kirkby, Tauranga. The tenders had been referred to the Works Committee.

Cr. Hansen reported to the Council last night that the Works Committee met on the 13 th inst. to consider which tender for sealing streets they should recommend the Council to accept. They came to the conclusion that it would be more satisfactory for the whole Council to go into the question. The Committee agreed that Mr. Murray should be given the opportunity to compete on equal terms in giving a price for road oil for the priming coat which he had not done, as he gave his tender according to specification. It was pointed out that Mr. Murray’s tender was the lowest. Cr. Hansen moved—That Mr. Murray’s tender be accepted.—Cr. Daines seconded. Cr, Macmillan asked for particulars of the contract. Itemised details of the full cost of the reconditioning and sealing of the various streets were submitted by Mr. Boak, borough engineer, and these totalled in the vicinity of £ 4000.

The widths of the sealing varied from 12ft. to 18ft.

The preparatory work will be done by the Council’s staff. Cr. Fleming objected to sealing roads twelve feet wide and maintained that when roads were sealed the minimum width should be eighteen feet. The Mayor said the varied widths had been already agreed to by the Council. Cr. Hansen’s motion was then put and carried. - The Mayor moved —That the Engineer be authorised to proceed with the preparation of Edgcumbe Road immediately; also, that he submit a report as to the cost. —Seconded by Cr. Daines and carried. Cr. King asked what was the position in regard to improving Cameron Road. 4 It was stated that the specifications had been submitted to the Public Works Department some time ago and had not yet been returned to the Council. . Messrs. H. L. Duncan and Co. Ltd., submitted a tender to supply metal at 10s 6d per yard. . Cr Perriman moved —That Messrs. Duncan and Co.’s tender be accepted. —Seconded by Cr. King and carried. "
