A PAGE FROM THE PAST Tauranga 50 Years Ago % - -- - We take the following paragraphs from the Bay of Plenty Times of October 20, ISSS: “In a letter from Napier, Mr E. B. Hoben, a former resident in Tauranga, and now living in Napier, states that if Tauranga with its fine harbour and climate could be lifted to the pushing Province in which he is located, it would.very soon be one of the biggest places in the Colony. Mr Hoben also states that the establishment in Tauranga of an Arbor Day and the Thursday half-holi-day are considered by the people of Napier to be extremely good.”
“At Mr London's cattle sale at Katikati 40 head of cattle were yarded, and nearly all changed hands at satisfactory prices, as follows: —■ “Yearlings, £1 2s; empty cows, £1 ss; heifers, £2 10s. The auctioneer, seeing Mr G. V. Stewart present, in a few words welcomed him back to Katikati after an absence of five and a-half years, which was responded to by three hearty cheers.” “The farmers at Te Puke say that the growth of grass this season is the best they have ever hadf About 120 acres have been sown in wheat, also a large area in oats, and the quantity of maize to be sown this season will exceed that of last. Mr H. W, Vercoe’s turnip crop at the Matai was a great success, some of the roots weighing 151 b. each, and he was enabled to fatten' three lots of cattle, of 50 head each, on ten acres.”
