The Chairman welcomed Mr Even/the new stationmaster) and Mr Barugh Mr Jaeger and Mr Wylie, four new members. Later he extended a cordial welcome to Mr Doidge and congratulated him on his election to Parliament. The Chamber would he very pleased to have his help as an honorary member and wished him the best of luck in his new position. —(Applause). . Mr Doidge thanked the Chairman for his kindly welcome, and expressed the hope that he would be able to be of service to the Chamber. New Members The following new members were elected: Mr W. G. Jaeger and the Tauranga Box Company. Hamilton Chamber Mr R. Challiner, Secretary of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, wrote advising that it desired each corporate body to appoint one representative as an ex officio member for the Council of that Chamber. The letter was received. Additional Constable Mr D. J. Cummings, Commissioner of Police, in acknowledging the receipt of a letter requesting that a resident constable be stationed at Mount Maunganui and that an additional constable be appointed for duty at Tauranga, advised that arrangements were being made to obtain. a suitable site for a police station at Mount Maunganui, and it was hoped to have plans for the necessary buildings put in hand at an early date. The stationing of an additional constable at Tauranga would receive consideration when a constable was available for the purpose. The Chairman said lie understood that an additional constable had been appointed. He moved —That the Commissioner of Police be thanked for Ms attention to the matter. The motion was seconded by Mr Bradney Williams and carried. Military Service The Secretary of the South Auckland Association of Country Chambers of Commerce, Matamata, wrote advising that the following remit had been received from Paeroa; “That in the opinion of this Association of Chambers of Commerce, the present system of voluntary military service is totally inadequate, in view of the disturbed condition of-, world affairs, and that the Government be urged to reinstate a system of universal compulsory training similar to that previously in force. Such a system, besides building up our defence forces to a reasonable strength would also provide valuable physical, technical and disciplinary training for the youth of this country, and ensure a more equitable distribution of the duty of national defence.”

The letter was received. The Strand Station Mr C. H. Burnett wrote under ~ date September 9, advising that he had suggested to the Minister of Railways that some Improvements be made at The Strand station. The Hon. D. G. Sullivan, Minister of Railways, in acknowledging the receipt of letter urging, that certain improvements be",put in hand at The Strand station, advised that he was having the matter investigated and on completion of inquiries he would communicate further. The Chairman moved —That Mr Burnett be thanked for his action. — Seconded by Mr Bieleski and carried. New Post Office. Mr C. H. Burnett under date September 10, wrote forwai’ding a letter as received by him from the Hon. B. Jones, Postmaster-General, in which he advised that it was intended to hold a formal ceremony at the opening of the new post office and also to affix a suitable commemorative tablet to the structure. cutive Committee. —Seconded by Mr .BieleSki and carried. Daylight Saving The question of altering the meeting hour was considered, and it was decided that the hour be eight o’clock during the period of daylight saving. Appreciation The Chairman referred to the splendid help given by Mr C. H. Burnett on matters concerning the Chamber. Mr Burnett had been always in close touch with the Chamber and had made many valuable suggestions. He moved —That the Chamber records its appreciation of the help given and interest taken by Mr Burnett in matters in respect to the Chamber of Cbmmerce. Mr Bradney Williams, as a former President, said he had great pleasure in seconding. The motion was supported by Mr Christian, who paid a tribute to Mr Burnett’s excellent services on behalf of the Chamber and the district, and expressed the hope that he Avould still continue to reside here. The motion was carried uuaui- | mously and with applause.
