For Better Lighting' A special instrument for measuring the amount of light in a room was exhibited at the monthly meeting of the Otago Electric Power Board. The chairman (Mr A. E. Russell) stated that this guage was available to consumers who wished to test the lighting of their homes, many people, he said,, used lamps not strong enough for the size of the room, and because of this there were many people wearing glasses to-day who did not need to do so. It was false economy to instal loAv-powered lamps, for better lighting meant better sight. This instrument would show the right-sized lamp for every room, and he hoped consumers would make use- of it. Rich Whaling Grounds. Mr Herbert D. Murphy, an Australian who is now managing director of the Norwegian Whaling Company, when he called in Sydney recently on his way to Noumea, said that the waters round the New Hebrides coast, had been found by Norwegian whaling ships to be one of the richest fishing grounds in the woi'ld. Whale fishing off the Australian coast, he said, had greatly increased the national wealth of Norway. In order to make a profit they had to catch 10 whales a week, but they had not found it difficult to maintain this average. They took only large bull whales..
