NEW FISHING BOAT
FOR TAURANGA FISHERIES LTD. j Auckland. June S Designed on entirely new lines to ' provide better balance and greater f convenience for the crew, a 50ft. j seine fishing boat has neen built at I a cost of £4OOO by Charles Bailey ■ and Son, Limited, for Tauranga j Fisheries, Limited. The boat will be launched from the boatbuilders’ slipway this afternoon, after being blessed by the Rev. Dr. L. T. Buxton and christened the iKatoa by Mrs J. W. Costello, the wife of one of the directors of the purchasing firm. Tlie Katoa was designed ,by Mr Janies Jurie, who is in partnership with Mr Costello, of Rotorua, and Mr John Baxter, of Tauranga. The boat has a beam of 14ft. and a draught of 7ft. Contrary to general practice the living quarters are provided aft and there is sufficient accommodation for six persons. The cabin is equipped with electricity and a bottled jois stove, a radio receiver and wardrobes. Amidships there is a fish locker ' capable of holding 300 baskets, or j approximately 15 tons of fish. Immediately forward of this locker is I the engine room, fitted with an 88 horse-power Diesel engine, which is electrically started. A bathroom is provided in the how of the boat. Another feature is the mechanical winch, with a lifting power of four tons. Mr Jurie said yesterday that the boat would he more seaworthy than the usual type of fishing launch, as tlie re-arrangement of quarters would eliminate any tendency for the bow to drag, while steering would be more efficient in all weathers and conditions? It is understood that since the construction of the Katoa two fishing boats of former type have been re-designed at an additional cost of about £7OO, and another new boat of similar plan to the Katoa is on order.
