SCHOOL COMMITTEE

.MONTHLY MHETINH The monthly meeting of the Tauranga District High School Committee was held on Friday night, Mr M . J. Stevens presiding. Others present were Mesdames F. Barraclongh and M. Christian, Rev. O. S. O. Gibson, Messrs C. Hayman, L. Flower, A. C. I Sherwood, A. L. Faulkner, and A. A. Fleming. Mr A. Bell, Headmaster was also present.

In order to spread the work subcommittees were set tip for dealing with matters of urgency—-tiuaiice and grounds. The Headmaster’s report was received.

It was decided to have the macroearpa hedge on Cameron Road and Fifth Avenue removed so as to make room for the new class rooms that are to be erected in the school grounds.

Arrangements enabling senior pupils and children of the lower standards accompanied with their parents, to visit the Waikato Winter Show to bo held in Hamilton on Wednesday, June 8. were approved. The special train will leave Tauranga at 7.15 a.m., arriving at Hamilton at 11.St a.m., returning at 5.30 p.m. and arriving at Tauranga at D. 16 p.m.. Fares are, adults Os 6d; children over 15 years, 4s 10d; under 15 years, 3s tid. Tickets will be obtainable from members of the School Committee. Senior pupils will travel in reserved carriages under the supervision of teachers and members of the Committee. Parents of children in classes below Form 1 (Higii School) are expected to accompany their own children. Parents had been circularised by the Headmaster, giving full particulars of the excursion. The report was adopted. Correspondence Letters were received from country schools approving in principal of the establishment of the Intermediate School in Tauranga and suggesting that a public meeting be held in Tauranga, when the subject could he discussed. It was decided to ask the Chairman and Secretary of the Auckland Education Board to fix a date which would be suitable for them to place the matter of the Intermediate School before committees and parents.

, The subject of the erection of the High School on the “Hillsdene” property was again discussed and it was decided to ask the Board to hand over the sole control of the property to the Committee and to ascertain if the High School was on the urgencv list.

Advice was received that Cabinet had approved of a grant for the erection of the new classrooms for the accommodation of pupils now being taught in outside buildings. The classrooms will be of the latest design.

A circular letter on the question of the abolition of Bible instruction in schools was received.

It was decided to oppose any alteration of the present system. The appointment of janitor, which had been under consideration for some time, was decided on. The schedule of duties are to be drawn up by the Chairman in consultation with the Headmaster. The salary will be approximately £250 per annum.

The visiting committee reported on several matters, which the committee authorised to be carried out. The report of the dental clinic was approved.
