TAURANGA UNION GILBEY CUP COMPETITION WINS FOR CADETS AND MATAKANA The Gilbey Cup competition was continued on Saturday, the star attraction being provided in the game between Cadet Old Boys and United Services, which was well above the usual standard of Club football. United Services led at the interval by 9 to 5, and looked like winning, but in the second half three penalty goals in quick succession—kicked by J. Davies —gave the lead to Cadets and they finished up winners by a margin of five points. The teams were:

Cadets.—J. Davies, G. Box, L. Mountier, V. Lee, J. Garvey, F. Dare, S. Short, S. Wright, J. Janies, J. Scandle, B. Gibson, R. Henderson, H. Kirschberg, A. Cave. N. Fletcher. United Services.—Smith, Grant, Barnes, Bellwood, Courtney, Hunter, Greenwood, S. Rolleston, Mitchell, Te Rore, E. Ake, Ormsby, M. Tangitu, McVerry, A. Rolleston.

United Services attacked early and a smart handling bout by the backs was finished off -by Barnes scoring in a good position and converting. Immediately after resumption United Services attacked and Courtney dropped a nice goal: United Services, 9; Cadets, O'. The Cadets launched a strong attack and a handling movement was well stopped by Barnes who cleared. The Cadets forwards rucked back rapidly. Garvey secured and sent the ball to Dare.,, who made a fine run and touched down between the posts. Davies converted: United Services, 9; Cadets, 5. Fast forward play continued, the backs being somewhat hampered by the slippery ball. Ake attempted to set his backs going, but Kirschberg and James checked the design to break through and play settled at midfield. Effective play by Kirschberg, Fletcher, Cave and Gibson, enabled Cadets to attack strongly, but they were beaten back by a powerful kick by Courtney who cleared to half-way. The Cadets forwards rucked back and pressed but United Services saved by forcing. From close play Dare obtained the ball and kicked over the opposing backs. Tangitu fielded and was pushed down but managed to force in front of Gibson. Early in the second half Fletcher, Kirschberg, James and Henderson led the Cadets to the United Services quarter, and pushed over. A scrum five yards out was ordered. A United Services player ignored the rules and Davies landed a goal from the resultant penalty: United Services, 9; Cadets, S. With only a difference of a point between the teams the pace quickened and the advantage passed to 1 Cadets who had the better of several ; scrums in United Services’ territory. (- The Cadets surged over twice in i; quick succession but could not touch i down. Then United Services were ' penalised and Davies kicked a goal 1 from a point near the sideline—a fine , effort, giving Cadets the lead by 11 i to 9. With a two points majority | Cadets held the play in their oppon- ! ents’ territory. S. Rollestou kicked i high and one of the Cadets’ backs : fell while fielding. The United Ser- ' vices’ forward ran up and the Cadets line was in danger until Dare saved with a long kick. United Services varied their tactics and were , greatly aided by superior kicking by Hunter and Courtney, but Garvey got in an effective clearance kick. Kirschberg, Fletcher, Gibson and James led the Cadets upfleld and 1 they attacked resolutely. Short then set his gacks going, but one of them had the ball knocked out of his hands just as he was about to cross lae line. Cadets held on in the twenty-five and then Davies added another three points with his third penalty goal: Cadets, 14; United Services, 9. The territorial advantage remained with Cadets and Kirschberg dribbled across the line, but United Services forced. Although five points down United Services were not dismayed and snappy short passing saw Barnes break away down the eastern flank, but Short tackled him and the play now settled in Cadets territory. United Services attacked- determinedly and Cadets had a busy time in keeping their line intact until Short cleared. The Cadets forwards—Kirschberg, Gibson, Fletcher and James in the van—then followed up a high punt by Dare. Mouutier obtained possession and kicked and followed up, but Hunter was handy and forced just ahead of him. The United Services forwards rucked through and | worked into an attacking position. Ake picked up and sent to Courtney who ran straight and then transferred to Tangitu who raced for the corner and touched down to finish off the most attractive run of the game. The kick, a difficult one, failed: Cadets, 14; United Services, 12. Play, mainly restricted to the forwards, continued between the twenty-five marks, with out material advantage to either side. Then Cadets attacked and Kirschberg fended his way across to score in the north-eastern corner. The kick failed and time was sounded shortly afterwards with the verdict in Cadets’ favour by 17 to 12. Bell each scored and at half-time the Cadets led by six points to nil. Early in the second half P. Cullen scored and Eric Faulkner converted. Even forward play ensued until P.
