OWNERS’ PROBLEMS
QUERIES FROM READERS
Q. The engine of my car makes a peculiar noise, especially when I am using the cheaper, or regular, petrol. It is a sound as of pebbles being shaken up in a can. I do not see how this can be from carbon as the car has not travelled 5.000 miles. H.F.D;
A. This noise is due to fuel detonation. It may be complicated with a little preignition caused, in turn, by using the wrong heat type of spark plug. The timing may be a little too far advanced. The first step would be to have the ignition timing checked.
Q. In an effort to rid the lines of air I had a mechanic bleed the brake
lines of my car, but we can’t seem to solve the problem. Air continues to get into the lines, because the pedal can be pumped several times before pressure builds up. I am sure that the line near the muffler does not overheat enough to boil the fluid. S.A. A. Hydraulic fluid withdrawn from the lines should not be "used over again, and it is important to have the- supply tank of the master cylinder filled before starting the bleeding process. If all this has been taken into account, then check the position of the piston of the master cylinder with respect to the compensating port.
Q. Thi3“ is the second time I have had trouble with the generator bearings. lam sure that the work was properly done. D.L.L. A. The generator on this car is driven by the same belt that operates the fan. Unquestionably the belt is too tight. . A Y-type belt should not be under tension.
