TOO GOOD TO LOSE
The Ministry of Labour has decided that marriage shall not terminate the services of Miss A. M. Jennings, who in an examination in 1931 beat 220 men. Only six other women Civil Servant officers have been kept on after their weddings. Miss Jennings, who was formerly assistant private secretary to Mr Ernest Brown, Minister of Labour, is a principal officer in the Ministry’s insurance department. She is to marry Mr Arnold Riesner. The general rule of the Civil Service is that women leave on marriage, but an exception is made in cases of special qualifications or experience. Miss Jennings obtained her B.A. degree in economics (modern “Greats”) at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford. In the examination in 1931, for inspectors of income tax, she headed the list. Her success entitled her to enter the Metropolitan Police, the Income Tax Department, or the Ministry of Labour, and she chose the Ministry.
