Half-Holiday Petition. ' A petition bearing six hundred and thirty-eight signatures is being presented to the Tauranga Borough Council to-day, asking for a poll to be taken on the question of the local shopping half-holiday.

Heavy Rain. Heavy rain fell last night, the registration by The Camp gauge for twenty-four hours ended 9 a.m. today being 92 points, making a total of 1.72 inches since Saturday last. Numerous shoAvers continued through the day and a clearance would be very Avelcome.

Pedestrian Knocked Doavu

About 10.45 o’clock last night two residents were walking on the footpath along Willow Street in a northerly direction. On reaching the Wharf Street-Willow Street intersection a small car, when turning the corner, struck one of the pedestrians, an elderly man, Mr Charles Johnson, who was knocked down and escaped with bruises to one of his legs. A taxi was called and Mr Johnson was conveyed to his home. The motorist did not stop, and it would be interesting to know if the driver was aware of the accident.

Motoring Accident

A head-on collision occurred on the Matamata-Tauranga road near the Taihoa turn-off on Saturday evening between cars driven by Mr Herbert Lewis, of Tauranga, and Mr W. D’Ath, of Taihoa. Both drivers and Mrs Norman Price, of Taihoa, and Mr O. D’Ath, of Putaruru, who were passengers in Mr W. D’Ath’s car, received injuries which necessitated medical attention at Matamata hospital. With the exception of Mr kewis, the injured were able to proceed to their homes afterwards. Mr Lewis received a broken rib and other injuries. Both cars were damaged.

Road Under Water. Word was received here to-day that the ford on the main road near Matata has been washed out by heavy rains. In places the Taneatna Road is under water.
