SAD CASE
PASSENGER ON ORION SYMPATHETIC FRIENDS Passengers on the Orion subscribed £322 for a woman, who was coming out to join her husband, but who received word in the Indian Ocean that he had been killed. He had been injured in an accident in England, but had recovered sufficiently to come to Australia, where his health was restored and he secured employment in a mine in West Australia. The husband brought out two of their children, and the wife was travelling with three. The sixth remained in England with relatives. By the time the Orion was in the Indian Ocean, her money had been reduced to £3. Then a wireless message informed her that her husband would not be able to meet her when the liner arrived at Freemantle, as he had been killed in a mining accident. In the tourist class, passengers contributed £SO, while in the first class the passengers mustered £27 2 and sent the money down to her. Grief-stricken, but comforted by the knowledge that she would not be penniless in a strange land, she went ashore at Fremantle.
