HIGH SCHOOL

SWIMMING SPORTS The Tauranga District High School swimming sports held in glorious weather yesterday afternoon, proved to he one of the most successful fixtures of recent years. The record entries provided a long programme, and swimming of a very high order resulted. The handicapping was so good that close finishes were experienced in nearly every race. The most pleasing feature of the swimming events was the splendid performance of the juniors. The undoubted ability of these young people will be well demonstrated when chey take their places as seniors in a few years’ time, and we can look forward with confidence to the time when they will be the school leaders in swimming and life-saving. The diving displays were a delight to watch, and showed the result of careful practice, and tuition. Entries for the events were over twice as many as in former years and the results were well up to standard. At the last minute, by special request, an old boys’ race was included in the programme. If sufficient support is forthcoming there is no doubt that this event will find a regular place on the programme.

Towards the end of the afternoon’s programme, Mr Peter Densem, one of the teachers, gave a demonstration of the methods of life-saving; in each case his approach, release, and rescue, was faultless. Afterwards Mr Densem illustrated the correct style of swimming on the back, to be used in life-saving. Needless to say this display was much appreciated by the spectators and especially by the 30 pupils who are trying for their bronze medallions next week.

The presence of so many parents and friends indicated that the value of swimming is becoming recognised and the many expressions of appreciation of the high standard shown encourage the hope that the attendance next year will be. considerably augmented. The officials are to be congratulated on the manner in which they completed a somewhat lengthy programme without undue delay.
