BOROUGH WATER SUPPLY

proposed exten-

SIGNS

mount maunganui and OTUMOETAI

' \pPLICATIOXfc« FOR SAX( TIOXS TO LOAXS

Matters in regard to the loan proposals for extending the oorough water supply to Mount Maunganui an d Otumoetai claimed the attention of the Borough Council at last night’s meeting. Miss S. W. Whitaker, Roberts Street, wrote under date February 2, in reference to the proposed application concerning the raising of loans for water supply for Mount Maunganui and Otumoetai, and asked when and where information would-be available for borough ratepayers. It was decided to reply that the information could be obtained from the Town Clerk. Later in the meeting the Town Clerk, Mr R. B. Shearman, said an objection to the proposed application to the Local Government Loans Board for its sanction to the borrowing of loan money in respect to the Mount Maunganui proposal had been received from Mr E. C. Banks, who was not a ratepayer of the Borough of Tauranga. There were also objections from S. N. Whitaker and C. H. Jeffreys. Cr lies commented on the fact that a letter from E. C. Banks in regard to the Mount Maunganui proposal had been published prior to the letter coming before the Council. He asked if any information had been supplied by the Town Clerk in regard to that letter. Mr Shearman replied that no information iu respect to Mr Banks’ letter had been supplied from Ins office to any person. Cr lies moved—That the Town Clerk be instructed not to forward any objections to the loan proposal other than those made by borough ratepayers. The motion was seconded by Cr Dailies and carried. - A motion proposed by Cr lies, and seconded by Cr Gallagher, was carried to the effect that the Council apply to the Local Government Loans Board for its sanction to the bor- ! rowing of the sum of £ 5,700 to be secured by a special rate of one farthing in the pound on the unimproved value of all rateable property appearing on the valuation roll for the time being in force for the Borough of Tauranga and raised for the purposes of constructing a water main from the Borough of Tauranga to the boundary of the | township oT Mount Maunganui in- i eluding the provision of all neces- j sary plant, material and labour and I doing all things necessary to com- j plete the works and effect supply. I

Another motion was then moved by Cr lies—That the Council apply to the Local Government Loans Board for its sanction to the borrowing of the sum of £ 4,600 to be secured by a special rate of thirteen-sixty-fourths pence in the pound on the unimproved value of all rateable property appearing on the valuation roll for the time being in force for the Borough of Tauranga and raised -for thfc- purposes of constructing arterial and distribution mains and providing a water supply for the district of Otumoetai as indicated on the plans of the proposal, and providing all necessary plant, material and labour doing all things necessary to complete the works and make the supply available. — In speaking to the motion Cr lies said the rate was fixed for security purposes and the two loan proposals would show handsome returns. Eventually the schemes would mean a reduction in the water rate as paid by borough ratepayers. The motion was seconded by Cr Youngman and carried.

We may state that the letter referred to above, which was published on Tuesday, was handed personallv by Mr E. C. Banks to the Editor. Any suggestion that the Town Clerk furnished the press with a copy is unwarranted and unfair.
