ARREST IN BUSH
AX I'XUI.EASAXT .JOURNEY
Constables Rice and Fuller had the bad luck last week-end to he called upon to chase into the Urewera Bush a man alleged to have been guilty of converting a motor car to his own use (says a message from Whakatane). The car, which was the property of Mr W. R. Bell, of the Rangitaiki Plains Dairy Factory, was taken from Edgecumbe on the evening of February 15. Three days afterwards the police got on to the track of the vehicle.and pursuit necessitated the use of horses and the trail took them into the Urewera in all the mud and slush of last Friday. One of the constables had to do the first part of his journey “bare-back” and his memories are not pleasant. After a weary trip they discovered the car about 14 miles from Waimana where it had been abandoned with the front wheels dangerously near a 300 ft drop. That did not complete the task, however, as they had to find the man. So they went to Matahi and eventually ran their quarry to earth in the bush and made an arrest. The accused, Herbert Maxfleld, was brought before the court in Taneatua and remanded for a week to appear in Whakatane. .
It is understood that other charges are pending.
