MONEY IN GOLF
£ 40-A-AVEEK PROFESSIONAL The news that the post of professional to Sunningdale Golf Club was worth about £ 2000 a year led many keen young golfers to consider turning professional, said the “News Chronicle.” But the £ 40-a-week professional, is a very rare bird. Only men at- j tached to the smartest clubs average anything like that figure. j One golf professional about a year ] ago told his* creditors that his aver- , age was about £ 200 a year—£4 a j week. J. H. Taylor, of Royal Mid-Surrey, | said that £ 1 a day was unusually good pay, and that in small clubs the ( profits ranged from £ 1 to £ 1 5s a j week. .. i Archie Compston has put it on record that the great majority “barely make a living.” | It depends on so many things . whether the job is profitable or not. J| If the membership of the club is ; wealthv and buys all the latest gad- , gets, and if members are willing to ~ take lessons just to “put the edge on j their game” or pay the professional j to go round with them, it can be a j Pa ßuf if'the®'’weather is bad, and the \ club draws its members from the : middle class, the professional is in | for a thin time.
