CORONATION WEEK
PROFITEERING RAMPANT The “News Chronicle” recently invited readers to send in authenticated cases where unfair gains were being made or sought in connection with the Coronation. Here is a selection takeii from ietters, “A householder on the route was showing me how the official stands obscure the view of the procession from her particular house, and said that about 80 people could get a brief glimpse through the trees. I suggested she should advertise seats at 10s 6d or £ 1 la for Coronation Day. She laughed. A syndicate, she said, had been canvassing all houses on the route, and had offered her £ 400 if she would let 120 people stand in the windows of the house. “Later, I phoned the syndicate. ‘Yes—just a few seats available,’ they said. ‘And the price?’ ‘Well, the positions vary—between £2O and £ 30 each’ ” “I know of a flat in the West End of London offered at £ 472 10s a week.”
