DUMB ANIMALS

PREVENTION OP CRUELTY At a public meeting, held in the Borough Council Chambers, last week, it was decided to form a branch of the Society for (he Prevention of Cruelly to Animals. The Mayor, Mr L. R. Wilkinson, was elected President, and the Rev. J. W. Smyth and Mr IT. E. C. Carter were chosen as Vice-Presidents. All present were elected to the Committee. The aim of the Society, as its name signifies, is the prevention of cruelty to animals. The aid of the Society may be sought, when considered necessary, by any person who sees any animal apparently ill-treated. The Rev. J. W. Smyth waited on the Tauranga County Council on Friday and stated that a branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals had been formed here. Its desire was that dumb animals should be treated with due consideration. He referred to the way in which the Society could carry out its work with a view to preventing cruelty to animals and appealed for the co-operation and help of the County Council. The Chairman, Cr G. IT. Mends, thanked Mr Smyth for meeting the Council and assured him of the support of Councillors in carrying on the laudable work of the Society.
