AMALGAMATION
NEW PROPOSAL
ONLY TWO LOCAL BODIES
MOTION TABLED BY CR MeKEXNA
I Cr McKenna moved at the meeting of the Tauranga County Council yesterday—That this meeting of the Tauranga County Council resolves that it is not in the best interests of the ratepayers of the Tauranga County to continue the system of dual control of public services in Tauranga County as exercised by this body and by the Tauranga Power Board and that steps be taken to merge the Power Board with the County Council. —In speaking to the motion, Cr McKenna said that for some years four members of the County Council were memoers of the Power Board, which comprised seven members. The Government considered there were too many local bodies in the Dominion. In his opinion two local bodies, the County Council and the Borough Council, would be sufficient for this district. He suggested that the County Council and the Borough Council should confer and submit a recommendation to the Minister as to what bodies should be absorbed by amalgamation. He was agreeable to defer his motion, Cr Alach agreed with Cr McKenna. Cr Gane suggested that the matter be deferred for a month., He thought there should be a rural hoard and a municipal board. Cr McKenna said he would be willing to withdraw his motion, and to give notice of motion for next meeting—That the . County Council and the Borough Council meet to consider the question of amalgamation of local bodies, and that dhe matterhe considered at the next meeting of the County Council. Leave was granted Cr McKenna to withdraw his motion and the motion indicated in the foregoing paragraph will accordingly come before the next meeting of the County Coun- | cil.
