A PAGE FROM THE PAST Tauranga 50 Years Ago In the Bay of Plenty Times of April 10, 1887. appeared the following paragraphs: ■■'the return match between th Tauranga and Whitianga Cricket Clubs was played at Meicuiy Bay yesterday, and resulted in a victory for Tauranga, who in their first innings scored 29, and in their second innings 75, compared to Whitianga s scores of 61 and 41. It will be remembered that the Whitianga team proved victorious on the occasion ol their visit to Tauranga at the New Year. The cricketers and excursionists were conveyed to their destination by the s.s. lona, Captain Amodeo, which left the Town Wharf at 5 p.m. on Thursday, arriving at Mercury Bay at midnight, after a passage during which an easterly swell made a recumbent position necessary for comfort. After the match, a dinner for the cricketers was held in Waterman’s Hotel, after which everyone went to the Athenaeum Hall, where dancing was enjoyed until close on 4 a.m. the next morning. The warning whistle of the steamer at daylight awakened all, and before long everyone was on board the s.s. Glenelg, which made the return trip to Tauranga in a smooth sea, arriving back at 2.30 that afternoon.”
“The cutter Eleanor, hence via Motiti, arrived in Auckland last Tuesday with a full cargo of maize.”
