EYE TREATMENT
MISS F. GORDON MEADOWS Facilities for treatment of the ills that flesh is heir to are provided in all branches of medical science, and the treatment of defective eyesight is specially included. London provides its Refraction Hospital, where thousands of patients are treated annually, and it is to London that students from all corners of the world go for training and to deepen their knowlege in optical science, as well as to keep abreast of the latest development in eye treatment. Courses in Orthoptics pertaining to the muscles of the eye—commonly known as squint—are available, as well as clinics and lectures. The training of the student is very thorough and includes an insight into the manufacture of lenses in the workshop of the school of optics. The student is enabled to judge if the anealing of lenses is suitable for particular sights. After an intensive course of three rears in sight testing and clinical experience, the student is enabled to recognise the pathalogical condition of the eye and treatment.
Quite recently Miss F. Gordon Meadows returned to New Zealand after studying for three years at London Refraction Hospital where she gained diplomas of exceptional merit. Miss Meadows, who was a pupil of the Tauranga High School, commenced her studies in London in 1932 and is a Fellow of the British Optical Association and a Fellow of the Spectacle makers’ Company of London, having passed the fellowship examinations of those Institutions. Miss Meadows is a life member of the Institute of Opticians, England, and also a member of the New Zealand Institute. Having won the distinction of being the first New Zealand born lady optician to qualify in London, Miss Meadows had the Freedom of London conferred upon her. With such a knowlege of general and mechanical optics and physiological subjects, MBs Meadows is fully qualified to deal with any defect in eyesight.*
