SPORTS GROUNDS

RENTAL INCREASED IX AUCKLAND

Auckland, April 9

All-round increases in ttie rentals charged croquet and bowling clubs, and also in the charges for football grounds and cricket pilches, were approved by the City Council last night. The new scale will be adopted as from April 15, and in the case of the rentals for the use of reserves by croquet, bowling and tennis clubs, the new charges will operate from the date of expiry of the present tenancies.

The superintendent of parks stated that the charges for hiring football grounds and cricket pilches were reduced some years ago on account of the depression. Increased wages and shorter hours had added to the cost of maintenance of all types of sports grounds. “Briefly, the charges operating for the various sports are less to-day than a quarter of a century ago, when the cost of labour and materials was 90 per cent, lower,” he added. He was therefore of the opinion that an allround increase was justified. Details of the proposed increases were shown in a schedule, which was approved by the council.

The Hon B. Martin, M.L.C., asked that a report showing the annual cost of maintenance of sports grounds, and the revenue received, should be made available.
